Marking the conclusion of the first phase of the Striking from the Margins research project ( https://www.strikingmargins.com), this conference is concerned centrally with reporting on progress, and with reviewing and developing the major thematic and analytical issues with which the project was concerned.
The conference will be organized around a number of papers especially solicited for this occasion, from a variety of perspectives, to examine and test the issues that the project had put on the table: The dynamic of the relationships, primarily in Syria and Iraq over the past two decades, between centers and margins, both defined precisely in terms of politics, social geography, economic and social segmentation, and the devolution of religious authority and modes of religiosity.
This conference is made possible by a generous grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York. It is called by the research project Striking from The Margins (Central European University - Centre for Religious Studies), in partnership with the Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (American University of Beirut) and the Arab Council for the Social Sciences.
