February 27, 2020

The Postgraduate summer course on “Political Theology of the Early Church from its Formation to Justinian” will take place at Central European University (CEU) in Budapest, Hungary, 22 July - 31 July, 2020

This summer course, directed by CEU Professor Gyorgy Gereby, addresses an earlier neglected topic in the history of Late Antiquity and Early Christianity which has received increasing attention in the last decades: the complex history of the theological justifications of legitimacy, that is, the versions of the metaphysics of power, affecting the Empire and the Church, the secular and the sacred. Of this long history of struggle and conflict, this SUN course will concentrate on the first six hundred years, from Augustus to Justinian.

Within this course, through the morning lectures and afternoon seminars, as well as through the visits to the Budapest Aquincum and History Museums, the lecturers seek to provide the participants with the opportunity of gaining a deeper insight into the reasons and motivations for the conflict and their resolutions in the developments of the relation between Church and secular power in Late Antiquity.

The application deadline is March 15, 2020. For more infromation, please go to the course webpage https://summeruniversity.ceu.edu/political-theology-2020 or visit the CEU Summer School website https://www.facebook.com/ceu.summer.
