Recent CEU Religious Studies Fellow, Khin Thidar, Publishes New Book on Theravāda Buddhism
The Center for Religous Studies would like to congratulate Professor Khin Thidar on the publication of her book entitled Theravāda Buddha Sāsanā in Myanmar (1752-1819) published by LAP LAMBERT Academic Publishing, May 4, 2017.
This book traces the canonical views held by laymen and monks practicing Theravāda Buddhism in Myanmar during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. In what was known as the Early Konbaung Period, populations of Mon, Myanmar, Shan, Kayin, Chin and Kachin were all known to practice Theravāda Buddhism and there is evidence of many religious establishments, cetiya (pagoda), and vihara (monasteries).
Professor Thidar, Professor of History at Mandalay University, Myanmar, was a CEU Visiting Research Fellow at Central Euopean University from January - March 2017. During her time at CEU, the topic of her research was “Reconsidering King Badon’s Exertions on Buddhism in Myanmar in the late 18th and early 19th Century”.
The research she conducted at CEU will be presented at the international conference on “Reorienting Myanmar Studies in Myanmar” which will be held in Yangon, Myanmar in February 2018.
We look forward to the publication to follow!
